It’s the start of yet another new year, and it should absolutely be exciting, but for many business owners it can also be a stressful time when they can no longer avoid the elephant in the room…the ‘people’ side of the business.
Many business owners don’t realise that whilst business strategy is essential to company success, if there is no people strategy underpinning this, the success will be limited and the company will struggle to get past a particular point. Your point of Intertia (sticking point) will remain the same and the resistance will continue to be there.
When Vouch began (formerly Coaching Combinations), nearly 8 years ago, we worked out very quickly that we needed to work out what the business was going to look like 5 years from starting. Now we’re looking at where we will be 5 years from now.
We have all heard the expression, dress for the job you want, not the one you have, well the same must be said for a business venture. If you have no specific documented and tangible plans for where you are going and you stay dressed the same as when you started off, you’ll remain the same. Working harder, does not mean being more influential or more successful.
As a team, we needed to really sit with what we wanted this company to look, sound and feel like in terms of values. We asked ourselves what we wanted to be known as, what we wanted to hold as a set of benchmarks to guide this venture, and what was important to us.
Vouch specialise in HR and people strategy supporting overall business strategy and this is what has always been our focus. We don’t do our own book keeping, accounting, SEO, branding, business strategising, marketing, the list goes on. We pay other experts to do all of this so we can focus on what we do best.
This has been a HUGE gift over the last few years. Yes, it costs money but it’s far better to invest in the best and get results than take 5 times longer to do something and then end up with a sub-optimal result that costs more in the long-term.
This is where ‘people pain’ comes in. We don’t mean this as an insult, but most people are not very good managers. Many managers and business owners feel as if they should just automatically be good at this because it’s a people skill and we are all people. Unfortunately, it doesn’t neccessarily work that way. We all have talents and they are all different. Business owners and managers need to take the pressure off themselves and get expert help here. In this way, they can get back to focusing on what their business is specialising in, rather than labouring through the maze of human behaviours and areas that they cannot make head nor tail of.
Where you place your focus is where you place your energy. Energy equals outcome, so make sure that you are focusing on the right things.
